Life & Legacy Overview

Alija Izetbegović was born on August 8, 1925, in the northern Bosnian town of Bosanski Šamac. Raised in Sarajevo, he earned a law degree from the University of Sarajevo. Under the Yugoslav communist regime, Izetbegović was repeatedly imprisoned for his philosophical writings on human freedom, religious ethics, and Muslim identity, including his seminal 1980 work Islam Between East and West.

As Yugoslavia disintegrated in 1990, Izetbegović founded the Party of Democratic Action (SDA) and was elected Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Following an overwhelmingly supported national referendum, he declared Bosnia's independence in March 1992, subsequently leading his besieged people through four years of brutal warfare and genocide.

Refusing to leave the besieged capital of Sarajevo, Izetbegović became a global symbol of moral resistance and steadfast resilience. In late 1995, he co-signed the Dayton Peace Agreement, preserving Bosnia and Herzegovina as a sovereign, multi-ethnic unified state. He served on the tripartite presidency until retiring in 2000, passing away in Sarajevo on October 19, 2003, with more than 150,000 citizens attending his memorial.
