Every year on October 24, Egypt commemorates Suez Day, the official National Day of Suez Governorate. This proud sovereign celebration marks the anniversary of the 1973 Battle of Suez, when civilian volunteers and remaining Egyptian army detachments joined forces in fierce urban guerrilla warfare to stop armored divisions from capturing the city and severing the vital corridor to Cairo.
The Epic Defense of October 24, 1973
In the closing hours of the 1973 October War, armored columns attempted to storm Suez City to secure a major psychological and tactical prize. Armed with hand grenades, Molotov cocktails, and light anti-tank weapons, ordinary citizens, police officers, and soldiers ambushed the tanks in the narrow alleyways around Arbaeen Police Station. By dusk, the armored assault was broken, forcing enemy forces to retreat and earning Suez its revered title: "The City of Heroes."
The Crossroads of Continents: The Suez Canal Legacy
Beyond its military valor, Suez City stands as the southern gateway to the Suez Canal, the 193-kilometer maritime artery inaugurated in 1869 that connects the Mediterranean with the Red Sea. Handling approximately 12% of total global trade and 30% of global container ship traffic, Suez remains one of the world's most indispensable maritime gateways.
