Osman II, known historically as Genç Osman ("Osman the Young"), was the reform-minded sixteenth Sultan of the Ottoman Empire whose ambitious plans to modernize the imperial administration and replace the corrupt Janissary corps led to a historic tragic regicide.
Born on November 3, 1604, at Topkapı Palace, Osman II was the eldest son of Sultan Ahmed I and Mahfiruz Hatun. Highly educated and multilingual (speaking Ottoman Turkish, Arabic, Persian, Greek, Latin, and Italian), Osman ascended the throne in 1618 at the age of fourteen following the deposition of his uncle Mustafa I. Recognizing that the once-elite Janissaries had become an undisciplined and corrupt military caste that threatened the empire's survival, Osman personally led his armies during the Polish campaign (Battle of Chocim, 1621) and resolved to enact radical reforms: replacing the Janissaries with a new loyal army from Anatolia and Syria, moving the imperial capital to Anatolia, and curbing clerical abuses. Threatening their privileges, the Janissaries revolted in May 1622, imprisoning and executing the seventeen-year-old sultan at the Yedikule Fortress. His tragic martyrdom made him a legendary symbol of early Ottoman modernization efforts.
