Larry Holmes: Biography, Historical Legacy & Tributes Wishes, Quotes, Greeting Card & Visual Ideas (2026)

Larry Holmes, nicknamed "The Easton Assassin", is an American boxing immortal who reigned as Heavyweight Champion of the World from 1978 to 1985, successfully defending his title 20 consecutive times (second only to Joe Louis in heavyweight history) with what is universally regarded as the greatest left jab in boxing history.

Born in Cuthbert, Georgia on November 3, 1949, and raised in Easton, Pennsylvania, Larry Holmes dropped out of school in the seventh grade to work in a car wash and quarry to support his family. Starting boxing at age nineteen, he served as a sparring partner for heavyweight titans Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, absorbing masterclasses in ring craft. On June 9, 1978, in one of the most ferocious battles in boxing history, Holmes defeated Ken Norton over fifteen brutal rounds to claim the WBC World Heavyweight Championship. Over the next seven years, Holmes dominated the division, compiling a 48–0 record that came within one win of Rocky Marciano's historic mark. Armed with a lightning-fast, piston-like left jab that could control range, blind opponents, and knock out contenders, Holmes defended his title against Muhammad Ali, Gerry Cooney, Earnie Shavers, and Trevor Berbick. Retiring with a record of 69 wins (44 by KO) and 6 losses, he proved an astute businessman, investing his boxing earnings into Easton real estate, restaurants, and community development. Inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2008, he remains celebrated as one of the top five heavyweights of all time.
