John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, was a prominent 18th-century British statesman who served three times as First Lord of the Admiralty, expanded the Royal Navy, sponsored the historic Pacific voyages of Captain James Cook, and achieved global culinary immortality as the namesake of the "sandwich".

Born in London on November 3, 1718, John Montagu succeeded his grandfather as the 4th Earl of Sandwich at the age of ten. Educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, he entered the House of Lords and served three influential terms as First Lord of the Admiralty (1748–1751, 1763, and 1771–1782). Sandwich presided over significant modernization of the Royal Navy dockyards, established copper sheathing for warship hulls to prevent shipworm damage, and financed Captain James Cook’s second and third historic exploratory voyages across the Pacific Ocean. In gratitude, Cook named both the Sandwich Islands (modern Hawaii) and the South Sandwich Islands in his honor. Montagu achieved accidental, permanent worldwide fame through his dining habit: so consumed by desk-bound state administrative papers and gambling games that he ordered cold salt beef placed between two slices of toasted bread so he could eat without leaving his work or dirtying his fingers, inspiring his colleagues to order "the same as Sandwich!" His birthday on November 3 is celebrated internationally as National Sandwich Day.
