Celebrated across the world on November 2, Aboubacar Somparé (Statesman, Diplomat & Mathematician) stands as an enduring emblem of excellence, perseverance, and historical transformation.
Biographical Journey & Early Roots
Elhadj Aboubacar Somparé (August 31, 1944 – November 2, 2017) was a prominent Guinean politician, diplomat, mathematician, and statesman. Serving as President of the National Assembly of Guinea from 2002 to 2008, Somparé occupied the second-highest constitutional office in the nation and played a pivotal, historic role in defending constitutional legality during the critical political transition following the death of President Lansana Conté in December 2008.
Mathematical Scholarship & Diplomatic Service
Born in Boké in northwestern Guinea, Somparé pursued higher education in mathematics and administration in Dakar and Paris. Entering public service under Guinea's first president Ahmed Sékou Touré, he served as Director-General of Information and later as Guinea’s Ambassador to France (1978–1984), where he navigated complex Franco-Guinean bilateral diplomacy with intellectual poise and statesmanship.
Rector, Party Leader & President of the National Assembly
Following the 1984 transition, Somparé served as Rector of the University of Conakry, mentoring a new generation of West African academics and civil servants. In 1995, he was elected to the National Assembly, serving as the parliamentary leader and Secretary-General of the ruling Unity and Progress Party (PUP). In 2002, he was elected President of the National Assembly, guiding Guinea’s parliament through intense legislative debates and socio-economic challenges.
The 2008 Succession Crisis & Constitutional Courage
On the night of December 22, 2008, following the demise of President Lansana Conté, Somparé, as constitutional successor, appeared on national television alongside Prime Minister Ahmed Tidiane Souaré to announce the president's passing and request the Supreme Court to declare the presidency vacant in accordance with the Constitution. Although a military junta led by Captain Moussa Dadis Camara seized power hours later, Somparé’s steadfast, courageous insistence on constitutional legality earned him enduring international respect as a principled guardian of civilian rule. He passed away in Conakry on November 2, 2017, celebrated across Guinea as a dignified statesman of intellect and peace.
